“Good day to you, old partner,” said Nels as he sat down across from Lars and Brand.

“Nobody invited you over her, former partner,” said Lars. He took out a pipe and stuffed it with ground up weed. At least Nels guessed it was weed, but wasn’t sure. He was certain it smelled awful. Weed makes for bad breath, hence Nels never smoked it.

“Good to see you in such a pleasant mood this evening. At least, we can assume it’s now evening, but it’s hard to tell how much time has passed.”

“Yeah, it gets awfully dark in the troll caves. That’s for sure.” Lars lit his pipe a sucked in a few long drags of the bitter smelling odor.

Nels coughed when Lars blew the smoke back out, but quickly regained his composure. Smiling, he said, “Darkness all around us, the bastard trolls have us in a rather tight corner, you might say.”

“What are you trying to say to me? Make it quick, Nels. I’m already tired of your shit.”

“Well, you see, we have something in common at the moment.”

“No we don’t. I have the upper hand in this little contest of wits. You don’t. Discussion ended.” Lars blew out another puff of smoke.

Nels thought he was going to gag. The smoke cloud permeated the air all around him, cutting off the breathable air from his lungs. Nels imagined himself sitting on the floor across these two jokers, his face turning green and slowly collapsing to the ground. Stay focused, he kept telling himself

“I think you’ll come to see that you’ve already pointed out our predicament for yourself.”

“And our predicament is?” Lars looked at Nels with his head cocked as if listening to every word that came out of his mouth. Nels thought about taking the man’s pipe and shoving it somewhere where the sun doesn’t shine. And he didn’t intend to hide in the troll cave.

Nels said, “That it gets awfully dark in the troll cave. The words came directly from your mouth. Pitch darkness, the kind you get lost in.”

“So what? You’re not afraid of the dark are you?”

“Quite contrary, I like the dark. But you see, I’d miss the sunlight if we never got out of here. I think you would too. Hence our common predicament.”

“Have you gone sissy on me? Oh wait, it’s already too late for that.” Lars laughed loud and rambunctiously, which cued Brand to do the same. The two men laughed for a little too long, a little too loud, and slightly off key. Not like that mattered at all.

That was Nels’s cue. They were just scared little boys. Scared of the dark. “I think you miss the point here.”

“That we’re stuck in a cave together. Don’t worry yourself about us. Me and Brand have a way out. Why don’t you move along and bother somebody else?”

“Well I will then. Seeing that you don’t want to hear my business offer.”

“Your business offers are like farts. They stink for too long, and then they’re disappear.”

Nels got up and walked away.
